The Lagotto Found the Truffle Before the Rabbi Found the Words

Welcome home

San Canzian sits on a hilltop in inland Istria, a stone village of red-tile roofs and terraced olive that has been keeping its protocols longer than the families it now hosts, and one of those protocols is the Orangerie, the glass-walled pavilion the estate maintains for the kind of morning the Istrian sky decided to deliver on the day of the wedding. The terrace was off. The pavilion was on. Nobody had to be told. Inside, the festoon lights had been switched on early against the wet light, and the room read as ceremony before anybody arrived to make it one.

Under the canopy a little later, the rabbi took his time, allowed that the couple already kept a fine home, and said: "Honestly, that is not your real home, it's a house. This is your home. Welcome home."

The room took it without surprise.

How the weekend got here

The welcome dinner had opened the long weekend two evenings earlier on the estate itself, the kind of dinner where nobody is yet keeping track of who has met whom. The next morning the wedding party boarded a bus into the Motovun forest for the eve of a Jewish wedding with truffle hunting in inland Istria. Ponchos went on against the damp. The line of figures crossing the wet ground looked less like a wedding party than a small expedition that had agreed on its uniform. Two dogs worked the roots. The smaller one, a white Lagotto, did the actual finding, nose down at the wet earth until the truffle came up. It was shaved over pasta at a long lunch the same day, with the brevity of something that had been negotiated underground for years and was now simply over.

The morning of the wedding day brought rain again. The bride spent it in a stone-walled prep room, adjusting a teardrop pearl earring at a mirror that doubled her reflection at its dark edges. The window beyond gave onto wet stone and the low cluster of red-tile roofs the estate sets itself among. There was no scramble around her. The estate had absorbed the weather, the way old estates do.

Under the chuppah

She came in wearing a Markarian wedding dress under the chuppah, off-the-shoulder white satin with structured puff sleeves and a corseted bodice, the kind of satin that holds its own shape against weather and opinion. The officiant opened in the name of Adonai. A niggun about serving God with joy and entering the canopy in song lifted off the front rows and did not quite settle. The older men in kippot held the kosher-observant core of the room. The pavilion's glass took the daylight from a sky still working out the rain, and held it inside the room. Behind the rabbi, a single pillar of dusty-pink garden roses with burgundy filler and dried grass held the visual weight of the structure on its own, so the room did not need to do that work.

He took his time with the souls. True lovers, he taught, are split at birth and spend a life finding each other again, and the canopy is where the finding gets acknowledged out loud. Then the ring. "Behold, you are made holy to me, with this ring, according to the traditions of Moses and Israel." He had the groom say it three times, in the room's hearing, and the threefold repetition did what threefold repetitions are meant to do, which is to make a private sentence into a witnessed one.

The vows closed differently. The bride called the groom everything she had ever wanted in a man, plus some more, and named him her dreamer, her free spirit. The groom's closer landed in a private vocabulary that was not in English and was not translated for the room — my hung bungalow — and the family had made immediate sense of it because the family makes immediate sense of most things. The pronouncement inverted the conventional order. Wife and husband, in that order, by the conventions of our people. It was the rabbi's small editorial gesture and nobody missed it.

The room at dinner

Dinner happened in the same room. The long communal table ran the length of the Orangerie, festoon lights now reading against the dark glass. What followed was less a sequence of speeches than a chorus arriving at the same observation in different mouths — that the family had absorbed the couple a long time ago, and the wedding was the public version. The sister's origin landed first in they started dating, stalking, dating, dating. The father, behind a stretch of Borat impressions, closed on his own private grammar: I like it very much. I like it. The mother offered, dryly, to share our Netflix account password with you. The room's eldest speaker had the last serious word, on antithetical compliments that slot right in next to each other without opposition, and closed on a Yiddish proverb about no place for complaint in this life. Under all of it, in different phrasings: you've been part of our family for many years. The room received it as confirmation rather than news.

What was already true

The first dance was Elton John's Your Song, which is a song about language being inadequate praise, and against the evening's catalogue of named virtues it functioned as a small dry comment. The floor opened. Black Eyed Peas. Nelly. The schedule dissolved by about the third song and was not reassembled.

Near the end of the night the rabbi returned with the Shehecheyanu, the blessing for having reached this moment at all, and the room quieted under it without being asked to. The teaching from the canopy had set the terms hours earlier. The wedding did not start the home. It acknowledged it. Earlier in the evening, one of the speakers had read the bride's second look — full-length gown, sheer cape veil, pale-rose bouquet — as the layers of your love. The phrase stayed in the room, the way the night's better phrases did. The next morning was lunch.

The Studiodt film, shot in Croatia at San Canzian Village & Hotel, holds the day at its full twenty-seven minutes, including what an editorial page cannot keep at scale: the speeches at the rate they actually arrived, the Hebrew of the Shehecheyanu before the dance opened, the room when nothing more was being announced.
